Furniture is a big investment and we like to think it will last for years so let's see what our options when dealing with furniture cleaning.
The only way to avoid having to clean your upholstered furniture is to keep it covered up in plastic. Since most of us want to enjoy our upholstery to the fullest by actually being able to touch, feel, sit and/or lay on it. It's a good idea to become familiar with the essentials of Cleaning Upholstery.
Upholstery fabrics come in an extensive range of colors, styles, fabrics and fibers. Most, however are designed to survive a good amount of use. Many are protected from showing premature signs of wear by the application of an anti-stain treatment. Whatever the case the first step in maintaining upholstery is keeping the surface dust at bay. This is achieved by frequent brushing and vacuuming.
Brushing upholstery is an often overlooked yet an important step. Using a soft brush on the fabric prior to vacuuming loosens upholstery pollutants that may otherwise cling. Hair and fur both notorious for becoming entangled with upholstery fabric fibers. Can prove hard to remove via vacuuming alone. In addition fur is known to clog vacuum filters. Upon brushing the offending hair or fur will transfer to the brush. Where it can be easily removed and discarded.
Vacuuming upholstered furniture is important though if you've been contentious about brushing. You can get by with surface vacuuming rather than more intensive vacuuming sessions. Surface vacuuming is a maintenance step intended to remove only the surface dust and dirt. All you need to do is use the appropriate vacuum attachment (upholstery attachment and brush attachment) and make sure you cover every area of the piece's surface.
More intense vacuuming is required once every couple of months. For more intense upholstery vacuuming make sure you follow these steps:
- Move furniture away from walls for access all surfaces.
- Brush all upholstered surfaces, including furniture arm, backs and undersides.
- Remove cushions.
- Clean vacuum filters as needed to ensure maximum suction
Spilled your Coffee?
Accidents and spills are inevitable. And if you want to avoid permanent reminders of them you should be prepared to take fast action when they occur.
The number one rule of thumb is to avoid using a lot of water (or cleaning liquid) when cleaning a spill. Instead, start by using as many dry towels as necessary to sop up spilled liquids.
If something solid has fallen onto your furniture. Remove it quickly and gently. Now treat the spot with a paste made of baking soda and water or laundry detergent and water. Allow to dry and then brush and vacuum away.
All signs of the spill should be erased (*Important note: Conduct a spot test before applying any treatment homemade or store bought to your upholstery. Apply a small amount of the solution/paste to a hidden area of the fabric and observe how the fabric reacts. If there is any discoloration or negative reaction, seek alternate means for dealing with the problem).
